Over Coffee - December 2017

Over the Coffee

While we have one more month left in the year 2017, we are beginning a new

church year with the first Sunday of Advent on December 3rd. The Common Lectionary

Readings for this new year in the month of December are as follows:

  • Dec. 3 Isaiah 64:1-9; Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:24-37
  • Dec. 10 Isaiah 40:1-11, Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13; 2 Peter 3:8-15a; Mark 1:1-8
  • Dec. 17 Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11; Psalm 126; 1 Thess. 5:16-24; John 1:6-8, 19-28
  • Dec. 24 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16; Luke 1:47-55; Romans 16:25-27; Luke 1:26-38
  • Dec. 31 Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Psalm 148; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:22-40

We will have Bible study on December 6th and 13th at 11:00 a.m., and then on

December 20th at 11:00; we will gather at the church and go caroling to a few of our

home-bound members. After caroling we will have our traditional lunch together at

Donato’s just up the street from the church. This has been a meaningful time for those

whom we have visited the last few years, so don't hesitate to come and join us. A great

singing voice is not a requirement!

Bible study will be cancelled on December 27th and will resume on January 3rd. We

will have some special music and additional readings on Christmas Eve Sunday,

December 24th, during the morning worship service. Thanks to all who helped decorate

for the Advent and Christmas season. The lights outside the church look great at night

What a year it has been! We studied some highlights in church history throughout

the year, culminating in our discussion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

during October. We hosted the Columbus Baptist Association Multi-Cultural Service on

October 8th. I had the privilege of speaking at that event, and Nancy Bootes prepared an

amazing dinner enjoyed by the sixty or so who came. We lost our oldest member, Hazel

Cline, who was 100 years old this past year. Many other highlights will be shared, Lord

willing, in the annual report next year. Enjoy Christmas and the anticipation of a New

Year!
