Over The Coffee

“April showers bring May flowers” we have learned over the years, and this is no

exception. We have seen the buds of trees and the perennials beginning to bloom, as well as

annuals wild and planted. What a joy to have the four seasons to embrace and measure our lives

against. We have made it through another winter season, Lenten season, and moving swiftly

toward Pentecost Sunday (May 15th) and the weeks that move us from spring into summer. I

will be continuing in the Common Lectionary on Sunday mornings through Pentecost and then

begin a series in the book of Acts through the remainder of May and through the summer. The

series will be titled, “Christian Lives Matter!” and it will relate the experiences of the early

church to our experience as believers in the secular culture of today. We have much to be

thankful to these early Christians for, and we certainly can learn from their willingness to put the

distractions of their time behind them and how they turned the world upside down. !

The Common Lectionary readings for May include: !

May 1 – Acts 16:9-15; Psalm 67; Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5; John 14:23-29

May 8 – Acts 16:16-34, Psalm 97, Revelation 22:12-21, John 17:20-26

May 15 – Acts 2:1-21; Psalm 104:24-35; Romans 8:14-17; John 14:8-17, 25-27

May 22 – Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; Psalm 8; Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15

May 29 – 1 Kings 18:20-39, Psalm 96:1-9, Galatians 1:1-12, Luke 7:1-10 !

You can continue to meditate and read the Lectionary Readings after Pentecost, but the

messages from that point on will be from the Book of Acts as we move section by section

through it for the summer. Here are the tentative Scripture passages and message titles for the

month of May: !

May 1 – John 14:23-29 – “A Gift Unlike Other Gifts”

May 8 – John 17:20-26 – “God’s Love Inside Us”

May 15 – Acts 2:1-21 – “Let Me Explain This To You”

May 22 – Acts 2:22-47 – “Escaping Corruption”

May 29 – Acts 3:1-26 – “Stirring Things Up”
