Over The Coffee - Oct 2016

We have reached October 2016 – a year before the October 31, 2017 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 Theses and the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.  In recognition of this amazing anniversary we will have a year-long time of study and reflection.  This fall we will do this through a program on six Sunday evenings in October and November which will look at the beginnings of the Christian movement up through the Early Church Fathers.  The program will be called “The Great Emergence” and will include a time of worship, teaching, discussion and communion – with a brief time of fellowship refreshments afterwards.  Look for more information in the newsletter and bulletins.  The dates will be October 16, 23, 30 and November 6, 13, and 20.  We will meet in the sanctuary at 4:00 pm for this program.

The Common Lectionary texts for October include:

 Oct. 2      Lamentations 1:1-6, Psalm 137, 2 Timothy 1:1-14, Luke 17:5-10

 Oct. 9      Jeremiah 29:1-7, Psalm 66:1-12, 2 Timothy 2:8-15, Luke 17:11-19

 Oct. 16    Jeremiah 31:27-34, Psalm 119:97-104, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5, Luke 18:1-8

 Oct. 23    Joel 2:23-32, Psalm 65, 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18, Luke 18:9-14

 Oct. 30    Habakkuk 1:1-4,2:1-4, Psalm 119:137-144, 2 Thess. 1:1-12, Luke 19:1-10

We will also receive our World Mission Offering on October 9th with a special service and a luncheon.  Rev. Steve Waltman and the Mission Team are preparing and service with an emphasis on lay mission opportunities.  As a denomination we are celebrating the open doors to the country of Cuba and the new missionaries who are going to have a role in our Baptist work there.

Shari and I will be on vacation the first Sunday of October and Rev. Steve Waltman will be preaching.  I had the pleasure of driving quickly to Chicago a week ago and taking in a Reds – Cubs game at Wrigley Field with my son Joel.  Then on the weekend Matthew came from Indianapolis and we had a last of the season canoe trip up the Scioto River north of Bellpointe and the reservoir in Delaware county.  Good to have these blessings during this nice fall weather.
